Beyond administrative, curatorial or communicative purposes, museum databases can also serve research purposes, by giving scholars access to new data and by allowing for the unveiling of unprecedented investigative perspectives. The present project aims to offer such an example of research-oriented museum data analysis, by providing a global historical, geographical, and material analysis of the objects contained and presented in the Waywiser online database of the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments (CHSI) at Harvard University. The long-term goal of this project is to convince other science museums to join forces and thus create a brand new ensemble of analytical and research perspectives that will expand the scholarship in the history of science and technology.
