Co-supervision

Description

Co-supervision implies a shared responsibility, on the part of the universities in Quebec and outside the country, of the education of the student and the supervision of his or her research. In order to accomplish this, the partner institutions develop a joint curriculum and name two research supervisors, one at each university. The doctoral student then completes his or her coursework and research at both institutions. He submits only one thesis, which is then defended before a committee, either in Quebec or abroad.

Objective

The aim of the thesis co-supervision programme is to support scientific collaboration between foreign and Quebec research groups by facilitating the mobility of doctoral students. Currently, the co-supervision programme at UQAM only involves French universities, while the one at Université de Montréal is also connected to several other European countries, including Belgium, Switzerland and Germany.

Awards

There are “Prizes for co-supervised theses”, which reward the best thesis written within the framework of a co-supervision between France and Quebec. These awards, worth $1500 CAD, are given each year to one student from France and one from Quebec.
